Consequences of sin

On September 10 at the Sunday morning service in “Philadelphia” church, Izhevsk, Ilijas Mukhametdinov preached. He touched upon a difficult theme – observing the Sabbath day. He gave an example of a situation when a person was asked to work on Sunday. This person did not want to sin and started pondering what to choose: observe God’s commandment or obey the employer. Ilijas emphasized the fact that there was no universally right answer but it was important to understand the principle that says: “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath” (Mark 2:27, 28). The preacher mentioned another story that evolved around Jesus and the Pharisees who tried to tempt Him and watched Him closely “to see if He would heal him on the Sabbath”. Declaring the true commandment of love to our neighbors, Jesus heals the sick person. Summing it all up, Ilijas said that having love as the foundation of our actions we would never sin.

Pastor Oleg Malykh addressed the church with a crucial thought about the consequences of sin. Every time when we sin, thus breaking God’s commandments, we inevitably face the consequences. One of them is becoming slaves to sin (Romans 6:16-18). Taking stories of Cain, David and Abraham as examples, the pastor showed that one sin led to others and man becomes a prisoner of the habit to sin. However when we let God enter our life, he gives us power to be victorious over sin. Another consequence of sin is a wrong perception of reality, when people do not realize that they will give account for all their actions (Hebrews 9:27). This is what believers also should remember because sin may seem insignificant but this does not lessen its destructive power. Self-deception is also one of the results of sin (Matthew 7:3) when people do something sinful even without noticing that, thinking that everything is fine. In order not to allow that, we always should collate our life with God’s Word so that we could repent and ask God for help. In addition to self-deception, another consequence of sin may be insensitivity to sinful actions. Such people are called “liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron” (1 Timothy 4:2). In this case the habit to sin becomes so strong that, even taking account of the sin a person believes that there is nothing wrong in that. The pastor pointed out one more consequence of sin – the state of discontent, when there is always something lacking and one wants something more “for complete satisfaction”. Meanwhile the Bible urges us to be grateful and freedom from sin enables us to do this. The main consequence the pastor mentioned is lack of ability to love our neighbors. God poured love into our hearts with His Holy Spirit but sin can cast a shadow on it. If we repent and start living according God’s commandment, we can love and forgive our neighbors. At the end of the sermon the pastor once again emphasized how important it is to remember about the consequences of sin, and blessed the church in a prayer.
