False sources

“What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self?” – Jesus asked once (Luke 9:25). People feeling the influence of modern tendencies would say that He was talking of fashion, shopping, desire to wallow in money, to buy new cars and prove their position in society through them. Advertising says: “Take it”, “You need it”, “You deserve it”. People of our time too often become infected with moneymaking and some passion to buy unnecessary things. Solomon called it leech and acquainted us with its two daughters, who cry: “Give! Give!” (Proverbs 30:15). So how can we comment on this? Is the Bible against wealth? These tough questions were the subject of a Sunday sermon of senior pastor of “Philadelphia” church in Izhevsk Pavel Zhelnovakov on July 2.

The truth is that “life does not consist in an abundance of possessions”, Jesus also said (Luke 12:15). No matter how odd this sounds but life does not consist in cars, houses, beautiful clothes or perfumes, it does not consist in your poverty or richness. The fortunes of some men of faith were estimated at millions, if not billions: this list only starts with Abraham, Jacob, and Job. And it’s noteworthy that God Himself gave them their fortunes. So what’s the hitch? Why does Jesus warn us not to “gain” but at the same time He says that our life does not consist in an abundance of possessions? The answer is simple and, as usual, concerns a soul of a man and not material posessions: what is the source of your life? It would be right to ask ourselves:  “Lord, is everything I possess Your blessing or is it the source of my life?” The pastor paid the audience’s attention to another passage from the Bible: through Jeremiah God accuses the people of Israel that they have forsaken Him, “the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water” (Jeremiah 2:12-13). The desire to dug their own cistern says that they were thirsty, but why do people search for other sources instead of drinking the living water? The senior pastor encouraged the believers to hold, to protect their minds from false sources, because they don’t contain the truth so necessary for our spirit, but breed arrogance, blur the vision and misinform.

Besides that, two engaged couples and a newborn baby were blessed at the service by the church. We congratulate Maxim and Daria Kharitonovs on the birth of a daughter, and wish Igor and Albina, Dmitry and Nadezhda to have faithful and deep relationship and wonderful time!
