Keeping God's commands

On June 25, Sunday service of “Philadelphia” church in Izhevsk started with a joyful event – blessing of a young family of Dmitriy and Kristina Ashikhmins whose wedding took place on June 24.

Church minister Ilyas Mukhametdinov shared a word from the Gospel, when Jesus was approached by people, who told Him “about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices” (Luke 13:1-9). For Jews sin and sufferings were tied together and having come to Jesus they wanted to know how this death could happen to those people. However, Jesus is calling to repent - not to rely on your own righteousness and good deeds or on a religious act, which cannot save us. He is calling us to realize our sinfulness and to have faith not in our righteousness from acts but in righteousness that was given to us by the sacrifice of Jesus for us. Then in the Gospel Jesus continues His answer with a parable about fig tree, which did not bear fruit for a long time. Repentance is that first fruit that the Lord is waiting from us.

Pastor Dmitriy Vladykin preached about God’s commands on that day. Have God’s commands taken second place in the lives of New Testament people living under grace? The pastor reminded to the listeners what the Lord says about obeying His word in the New Testament.   First of all, keeping His commands testifies that we know God and His love to us (1 John 2:3-5), second of all, those are the words of Jesus, that through keeping commands we show love to Him (John 14:15), third of all, if we obey His word we will not see death (John 8:51). In the conclusion of his sermon the pastor called the church to go deep into studying God’s commands and what He is expecting from us as His children.
