Learn to be grateful

On May 20 at the Sunday service in “Philadelphia” church, Izhevsk, senior pastor Pavel Zhelnovakov preached on gratitude. “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” – that is what the Apostle Paul writes (Thessalonians 5:18). But how can we give thanks if our life collapses? How can we give thanks if we do not feel any gratitude? What can a person be grateful for? It is difficult to give thanks because one must be content with everything in order to feel gratitude at least in something. The Apostle Paul in 2 Timothy 3 writes himself that in the last days this would be typical of people – to be ungrateful.

Let us recall the event from Jesus’s life with ten men who had leprosy when all the ten had been healed but only one came back to give thanks (Luke 17:12-19). Notice Jesus’s perplexity: “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine?” Jesus is surprised. He expected gratitude as a natural reaction. God waits gratitude from us. That is the reason why we should give thanks and keep on learning to do it.

The church partook the Holy Communion – an important tradition left by Jesus Himself so that we remember His sacrifice every time when we take part in this sacrament.
